Staff & Program

Our staff includes swim instructors:

Henry Hummert

Malaika Mugera

Martha Zeytinci

Rachel Pencykowki

Tomas Salazar

Lifeguard Seth Young

Our developmentally appropriate, progressive, swim curriculum, eases students into first learning how to orient in the water by learning bubbles, blast offs and breathing techniques. Adding proper arm and leg movement to make progress through the water. Advanced students will learn competitive strokes.

Building trust is a huge part of the learning process, even more so in water. Instructors will describe a skill, demonstrate, then ask each student to attempt. Instructors will not ask for a skill that is out of the developmental progression and will never ‘make’ a student perform a task that the student is not comfortable doing. Please know our instructors will ask students to show a skill, but students are in control. Refusals turn to trust over time. Learning in the water with new instructors can be difficult and we are experts who understand that fact.

Programming takes place before and after the swim lesson sessions, so the staff may be occupied with another group. Please email any questions or concerns about your swimmer or the program so other programs are not disrupted. However, immediately bring up any safety concerns to staff so that we may address the issue.

Locker Rooms

Locker rooms are used on a limited basis. The staff does not provide supervision in the locker room. If your child needs to use the restroom during practice, we ask that you accompany them and use the shower briefly to maintain sanitary conditions in the pool. The shower also helps to pull suits back up. Let us know if you need a private restroom, not within the gendered locker rooms, and the staff will direct you to the coaches’ locker room.

Recommendations for Lessons

Swim goggles that do not cover the nose and a form-fitting swimsuit will be best for swim lessons.

It will be helpful for your swimmer to have a calm morning before lessons - a small bit of breakfast and a small drink for hydration. Feel free to arrive a few minutes early to use facilities and get acquainted. Once instructors are with the group and lessons begin, please use the stairs and observe from above the pool deck.

Weather/ Pool Closure Policy

In case of inclement weather or lightning, practices may be delayed or canceled. In case of pool closures at the UCity Natatorium, practice may be canceled and or rescheduled.
