Mary Lhotak, Beginners
Swim teaching and technique have been passions of mine since early on. I sought out a swim camp experience at around 16 years to be around Dr. James Counsilman and his legendary scientific methods of stroke analysis. I paid for school and extras with swim teaching and lifeguarding jobs that complemented my training schedule, bicycling between all the different locales. College was in Minnesota where I was part of an extremely strong NCAA Division III team, St. Olaf. My college coach Reed Wahlberg, was the consummate swim geek and I thrived in his championship environment.
After college I settled in St Louis and worked for Citicorp Mortgage responding to executive level customer service issues (letters to the president, etc) and later in their fraud department. In the summer I had a small business teaching swim lessons. As my four children started swimming for the University City Swim Club, I was drawn back into coaching. I originally coached water polo while in college and still do at University City High School.
An important part of my job as head coach is to help each individual find the role that swimming will play in their lives today and in the future. I want to make each practice engaging and challenging, prepare all athletes for competition, and find out what each athlete is passionate about in their lives.
I live in University City with my husband Chris Lhotak and our blended Brady Brady Bunch family of three young men and three young women. Michael and Grace both work at a hospital, Martha, Sammy and Tom are all in college and Sophia is student at University City High School. I like to ride bikes and be creative in my free time.
